Ribe

Ribe.jpg

Ribe is the principal port-city on the western coast of Jutland and the seat of power for the Jarl of Ribe who administers all of the surrounding towns, villages steadings. Ribe is second in size only to Heiðabýr (Hedeby) and has a population of a few thousand people. Ribe is well fortified on all sides by a large palisade on top of a ditch and embankment, except towards the sea which only has a modest ditch and embankment. Almost all types of tradesmen and wares from all across europe and beyond can usually be found in Ribe's markets, although there is rarely the quantity of exotic eastern goods that can be found in major trading centres such as Heiðabýr.

While Ribe is an active trading port, much of her profits come from war booty, plunder and slaves as a great many raids across the North Sea set off from here. The inhabitants of Ribe principally follow Forn Siðr [The Old Way], however, there is a small but burgeoning Christian community in Ribe. The only Christian church, Ansgar's Church, was built in 860 ( ~seven years ago). Despite being very small and not very noteworthy, it serves to promote valuable trade from outside of Scandinavia and as such it falls under the Jarl's personal protection.

Ribe has suffered from poor crops for several years and there is a shortage of good grain, so far she has been spared the widespread ravages of the Evil Fire.

Hvítr Hjǫrtr

The Hvítr Hjǫrtr is a superior quality inn in the centre of Ribe. The inn is a large, well built hall not far from the main market. While the prices are very high, everything is just as it is expected, great food, great drink and the wenches are the prettiest to be found in any public house. There is rarely any trouble, no fighting or thievery in this establishment, those that start anything are swiftly and brutally dealt with by a gang of thugs or by the local Gestir who the landlord pays to keep the peace, and since the Jarl has a vested interest in keeping the establishment 'clean' he will doubtless turn a blind eye to any over zealous use of force when anybody prevents a breech of the peace.

With important dignitaries, emissaries and wealthy traders all stopping here to rest, feed and refresh themselves, there are often some very well connected travellers passing through and they frequently have the latest news from far away lands or interesting rumours. Anybody with any ambition will drink at the Hvítr Hjǫrtr rather than the other cheap and dirty beer halls in the city, where a good night out is one where you don't get robbed and stabbed...
