COMBAT STYLES FOR NORSE CULTURE

Combat Styles.png

These combat styles represent the combat styles available to characters from the Norse Culture (ie: the Player Characters) when they enter the campaign. Other cultures may have their own, possibly very similar or identical, combat styles, and these may be learned by the PCs should they find a teacher or some other source of tuition.

  • Karl [Freeman] (Cultural Style)
This is the Norse cultural combat style. Most freemen in Norse Culture will have some basic training in this style. This style does not include formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Hirðir [Herder]
This style is almost exclusively used by Norse herders to deter bandits and wolves from attacking their animals. This style does not include formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Langvápn [Long Weapons]
This style is for exclusively two-handed weapons, it is a battle orientated style, typically used to support shield wall line formations. The greataxe is a tough weapon to master, so the combat style focuses on fewer weapons that most other styles. This combat style includes the wedge & line formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Leiðangr [Levy]
This style is for light, missile-throwing warriors who are also capable of melee, but will generally act as skirmishers. This combat style include the skirmishing formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Lítillvápn [Short Weapon]
This is an up-close and personal combat style used primarily where larger weapons are a hindrance or when concealing weapons to attack by surprise is an advantage. This combat style does not include formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Særmaðr [Seaman]
Most sailors learn to use a few weapons as the sea is a dangerous place to be! This combat style does not include formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Skjaldborg [Shield Wall]
This is the most common Norse infantry combat style focusing on medium and long reach weapons. This combat style includes the wedge & line formation training for participation in large scale battles.
  • Veiðimaðr [Huntsman]
Bowmen train for hunting and for war, the bow is a tough weapon to master so the style focuses on learning fewer weapons that most other combat styles. This combat style include the skirmishing formation training for participation in large scale battles.

ADDING WEAPONS TO A COMBAT STYLE

Mythras, Classic Fantasy, Page 99 wrote:Learning New Combat Styles
Adding a new weapon to a Combat Style requires 1 Experience Roll and takes 1 month of training in the weapon. This allows the new weapon to be wielded using the character’s Combat Style at 1 grade of Difficulty. After a further play session involving the award of Experience Rolls, a second month of training allows the weapon to be used at full skill level. This requires the player to expend an additional Experience Roll as normal.

Requires a source of knowledge from which to learn...
