Armour Table.png

NOTE: As noted by asterisks, certain armour is not available for head protection and other armour is only available for head protection. The table includes leather armour material variants which cost less than the default material, but have increased ENC.

The armour shown below in this thread represents examples of the majority of historic armour styles typically found in North-western Europe & Scandinavia around the 9th century. Almost exclusively, the only materials used in armour construction were iron, leather, hides, furs, linen or wool. These examples are what players should expect to find in the campaign, however they are free to wear armour on a per-location basis.

Lamellar armour probably was not a contemporary 9th Century Scandinavian armour. It is hotly debated by historians based on a single archaeological find from 'foreign barracks' in Birka. However, in the interests of running an interesting and diverse campaign while keeping in mind the vast number of reenactors looking very cool in lamellar armour it will remain in the game, but it will be a somewhat less commonly available armour. Furthermore, lamellar armour must be imported from Byzantium. Helmets may have been possible to craft out of lamellar armour, but they will not be available in this campaign.

WEARING ARMOUR OF A DIFFERENT SIZE
The following rule supersedes RQ6e "Armour and SIZ" on page 88.

Helms & armour (and regular hats & clothing) all have a clothes size (ie: XS,S,M,L,XL,XXL or XXXL), which is different for items worn on the body rather than the head. To check a character's hat and clothes sizes cross-reference their SIZ and body frame type on the table below:-

Clothing Size.png

Note: Clothes (and hat) sizes are automatically calculated on the player-character's spreadsheet.

Helms & armour that are one or more sizes too small cannot be worn. For example, a character who was normally a hat size "L" could not wear a helmet that was size "M", it's just too small. Wearing larger armour and helms is possible, but as the size difference increases so does the ENC (which increases Strike Rank penalty).

Note: ENC is always rounded up to the nearest whole number.

ALTERING ARMOUR
As a price guide for altering armour:-

  • Decrease clothing by 1 size = 10% of standard price
  • Increase clothing by 1 size= 20% of standard price

Time taken for alterations will vary, but around 30d worth of armour alterations will take about a day.
