MYTHOS & HISTORY
Kaupmenn Gildi are a collective of traders who operate together for mutual advantage and for regulation of prices. This ensures market stability and prevents runaway inflation, both of which in turn ensure their continued prosperity. They trade across Scandinavia in all manner of trade goods including weapons, livestock and slaves.

NATURE
Kaupmenn Gildi trade goods wherever they can across Scandinavia, always buying as low as possible and selling for around the price agreed by their fellow members. A few of them will occasionally turn their hand to raiding foreign lands when they are desperate, although they don't tend to operate outside of Scandinavia as that is about the limit of their influence.
Most traders, foreign or domestic, will double as spies, selling intelligence to a lord for a reward of silver and for his protection while travelling their lands.

In Scandinavia, the Kaupmenn Gildi will tend to gang up on non-member merchants, they will force them to join, or otherwise try and ruin their market, undercutting their rates to force them out of business, and in extremes simply killing those that have no protection and taking their wares for the guild. However, the steady prices and fair trading policies means that members of the Kaupmenn Gildi are generally well liked and respected wherever they are encountered, they bring with them both the goods from far away lands and the latest news. For a small fee they will also deliver messages, acting as a sort of long distance mail service, for which their reputation for success is exceedingly good.

The darker side of guild is their slave trading, it's also the most profitable. Slaves are bought from raiders and sold to steadings across Scandinavia where they're usually put to work as labourers on farms. Merchants generally take very good care of their slaves, after all, damaged merchandise commands a lower value.

ORGANISATION
Kaupmenn Gildi members, almost without exception, operate independently from a lord. They can almost always be found in itinerant groups travelling between the large market towns, ports, settlements and farmsteads, by land and by sea. They meet informally up to three times a year at the time of the major sacrifices, but they often have an extensive knowledge of a trade network to allow them to pass news and messages. Kaupmenn Gildi are not an overly large organisation, but they are one of the more powerful. They keep themselves to themselves, not dabbling in politics and power, preferring to to profit from others wars and not to personally get involved in them. Picking a fight with the Kaupmenn Gildi is a bad idea, they often employ high quality mercenaries, and they have often the support of the people and the local lords. Only bandits and the most wayward lords would even consider such a course of action as Kaupmenn Gildi bring stability, commerce, news and enemy intelligence to the regions they travel.
