Tryggr is Dane from the settlement of Vágrvík in Western Jutland. He is about average height with a medium build, and it is said that he's stronger than most but a little less fit. He has a family obligation to recover something stolen from his family and so he has travelled to Jórvík in the new lands across the sea.

The Saga of Tryggr Áleifsson

Tryggr always hung around his mother, Gerda, who was a respected healer in Vágrvík. Always prefering mending things to destroying stuff, it came as a shock to him when raiders plundered his homestead; and a priceless object owned by his family was taken. That was nearly two years ago and the raiders are rumoured to have sailed to the new lands to serve the Ragnarssons fighting the Englar. On his deathbed Áleif made Tryggr, his second son, swear to retrieve it. He's not sure what this item is or why it is so special, but loyalty to his deceased father drives him to complete his oath.

After his father's death, his mother married a likeable neighbouring farmer worker, Oddi, and they included in the bride-price that his elder brother should be allowed to inherit the late father's pastures once he is married. That hasn't happened yet, but Tryggr knows that there's no future for him in Vágrvík. He has decided to follow up on the leads about the raiders who stole the precious family object (whatever that may be), and his mother helped him getting a working passage over to "the new lands" of Northumbria, across the western sea. Once he arrived in the great city of Jórvík, late in the year of 867 by the Christian record, he managed to get employment looking after livestock belonging to local wealthy landowners over the winter into the new year of 868. The fact that he also knows a thing or two as a healer have made him sought after by wounded warriors, of which there are many in Jórvík.

Now he is away from everybody knowing about his vendetta, it suddenly became less important to follow up on the promise. Besides, he's not good at fighting, and hold no illusions that he can win it back in a duel anyway. So he has settled on the outskirts of Jórvík, and is reasonably content with life, although the future is still bleak as there is almost no possibility of him ever getting his own land. He has been able to pick up a little Anglian in the markets and from his neighbours, and they all complement him.
