The Saga of Gunnar 'Ǫxbrjótr' Gunnarsson

Gunnar Gunnarsson's earliest memories involve asking his mother where his father was, "He is lost to us, Gunnar, lost on a raiding party in the West, fighting in the lands of the Inn Nýi Siðr." his mother, Aslaug, replies. Gunnar's mother brought him up to be his father's son; strong, fearless, always courteous and devoted to Forn Siðr - the True Way.

Gunnar grew strong and straight - he was a healthy boy who grew into a solid young man, skilled with the langøx ok langspjót. His mother, encouraged him to devote himself to learning as much as he could about Forn Siðr; how to track, how to be strong willed, to choose his words carefully to show proper respect, to be canny with his thinking, how to speak to men and inspire those who listened. When he wasn't trying to improve himself, he would spend his time playing hnafetafl and always carried the set his father had made for him when he was just an infant.

Aslaug is a devout woman and keeps herself away from the normal throng of people. Aslaug has always been reverent towards her ancestors and the spirits, although nobody knew if she she could actually communicate with them people have always been wary that she might be a seiðr.

Certainly Gunnar never found himself amongst the popular, always on the edge of the groups of people who made up society. Yet he grew up content, and waited patiently for his destiny to be shown to him. Gunnar has been devoted to his mother, and spent his time, as the eldest son, ensuring there was firewood in the hearth, and food on the table. Since he became a man,Gunnar has been a member of the Jarl's Gestir, and has been protecting the local community.

One day, Gunnar was alone in the woods felling a tree, when a strange feeling overcame him. He had to sit down, trembling and dizzy, and then he became separated from his body and was overcome by a vision. Gunnar saw his ancestors speaking to him as clear as day, somehow he knew who they were and understood what they said, and he felt more complete, but where was his father amongst them? Absent.

Then his ancestors spoke to him, "Gunnar, you must go west and avenge your father, it is your destiny, Urðr, Verðandi ok Skuld will it so. You must be fearless, the Alfǫðr will be watching, seek out the Óðinnflokkr and follow their way." The vision cleared, Gunnar could tell from the sun he had been unconscious for hours, but it felt like only a few minutes. And he knew what he had to do.
