Biarni is a Half-Dane from the settlement of Vágrvik in Western Jutland. He is said to have slightly faster wits and worse luck than most, and some say he is hard to get along with. He is an associate member of the Kaupmaðr Gildi.

The Saga of Biarni Grimrsson

With no silver to pay the blood-money for the murder of a rival, the young Grimr Asrödrson fled Norway for Denmark. There, he set himself up in service to the Jarl of Ribe, before eventually settling in Vágrvik to raise a family.

It is now five years since he died, leaving his wife Ingunn (a freed Frankish thrall) and four sons. The eldest, Asrödr Grimrsson, inherited the steading and soon made it clear that with his intention to marry there would no longer be room for everyone under his roof. With his share of the inheritance, Biarni Grimrsson set out to seek his fortune. Travelling with merchant vessels from Ribe, he has tried to expand his limited wealth by trade overseas -in particular to Francia, where his mother's tongue has proven of use.

Recently, Biarni was sponsored to join the Kaupmadr Gildi by Vestarr Thoroddrsson, a Vágrvik merchant under whom he had sailed many times. After meeting with the Master of the Gildi in Ribe, Styrkarr Altison, Biarni was given a mission on behalf of the Gildi: He was to travel to far Northumbria and contact the Danish rulers of that land to obtain permission for the Kaumadr Gildi to operate there. He was then given passage as a crewman on a Swedish knorr bound for Frisia.

Always mindful of opportunity, Biarni invested what he had in low-bulk wares he believed to be profitable in Northumbria and the neighbouring lands. He then packed his belongings and set to sea. In the first port of call, "Jever" in Saxony, he was left behind to guard the ship as the crew went to a tavern. Resentful of guard duty, he was nevertheless dismayed when armed men came aboard and confiscated the ship and the cargo -including his own, as he barely managed to get his backpack with him ashore. Drawn swords quickly silenced his protests. From what he could gather across the language barrier the crew had gotten into some kind of trouble, probably getting into a drunken brawl, and now were under arrest awaiting an unknown fate. Someone had died as well -maybe crew members, maybe others, maybe both, and the knorr and cargo were seized as fines or blood-money.

With little money, little understanding of the language and worried about vengeful relatives of dead men and the hostile attentions of the followers of the Nailed God of the Southerners, Biarni spent the day at the docks where a Dane would attract the least attention. He was hoping for news of the crew or for some way to set things right -or at least passage out of this damned town. This is where he meets Thorvaldr Vestarsson, son of Vestarr Thoroddrsson, who might be able to offer passage away from here...

Biarni Grimrsson is a man in his early 20s, of average height and slightly overweight. He tends to dress as well as he can afford to, which is not all that well at the moment. He is quite bright and has a good sense of numbers and profit, but his unpolished people skills and bad luck has kept him from being a proper rising star in the world of trade and commerce. He has spent enough time on merchant vessels and in ports to be quite comfortable in both. His lack of proper martial training has made him a bit cautious -he is no coward, but he is aware of his limits.

Skuggi

Skuggi.jpg

Skuggi is a hundr, a faithful pet of Biarni's who will rarely leave his side. Skuggi is an average sized hundr and he is believed to be highly intelligent, but he's only moderately obedient. He's never been especially good at hunting, herding or guarding, despite having a keen, wet nose, good ears and sharp eyes. Due to his size, temperament and breed, Skuggi would pose little serious threat to a fully grown, armed man. However, he is very friendly and makes a very enjoyable, loyal companion. Skuggi is always hungry.
