Sulki nods to indicate his understanding of the plan and adds his own praise of Eymundr's ideas to those of Dolfr. To Biarni, he nods again. "I'll bring a branch along, though my destination is the gate. I agree, it is best to bring what we need if we can rather than relying on the chance that they're going to conveniently leave stuff around for us to use."

Nothing further to add to the plan occuring to him at this time, Sulki goes with the others to start building the ladders.

Time: Evening, 156-867 [night: 8hrs]
Weather: Chill, overcast, with rain.
Wind: Light breeze (NW)

After breakfast the Menn af Vágrvik make their decision to attack when darkness falls, they would attempt to get over the fence unseen. There is some merit to their plan, as being an overcast night and as the moon is waning visibility would be limited to about half the width of the Kristr Heimisgarðar, and hopefully with the rain not many will venture outside.

Still, they would need to limit their exposure time as they broke cover, and running and jumping would make noise that might attract unwanted attention, so a quick way to get up and over the fence would be needed. Had the fence been dry it might not have been an issue, but the soaked timbers would make climbing it a much trickier business. So it was decided that a rope ladder would be constructed from the length of hemp rope that Sulki had been carrying.

Early in the morning the men had walked some distance from the Kristr Heimisgarðar so that they could collect wooden rungs for their rope ladder and remain undetected. The looked for branches of harder woods, like elm, as the the firs wouldn't take much weight. However, it would most likely be the knots that failed before the wood. Had the men brought some tools and nails with them they would have been able to fashion a much stronger ladder of all wood construction. When they were finished their rope ladder, made from a single length of hemp rope (closed at one end), was a little longer than the height of two men [4m]. It was no a fair bit heavier [5 ENC] than when it was just a rope, but Biarni could carry the rope ladder without feeling burdened.

By the mid afternoon the Menn af Vágrvik had made their way back to the trees near the Kristr Heimisgarðar and were no just waiting for darkness to fall. Time past slowly as the men waited in the chill rain, but eventually the daylight began to fade and they were ready to get into position for their assault. By the time it was dark the men were set up facing the east side of the compound where there were most building, waiting in the tree line for Tjodolfr to give them the word. Of course, one of them would still have to climb the fence to get the rope ladder up or over and find a way to secure it....

As the men are gather before they go out of cover. Tjodolfer walks over to Lofi and Visper " You are used to climbing on the wet timber of ships so this should be nothing for you. Fly over the fence like Ratatosk and place the rope ladder for us." Tjodolfer point at the Rope ladder. "Take that and make a bundel of your javelins and shield and we will toss it to you when you are opp there. You are first man out off you go ill be right behind you." Dolfer smiles to Lofi picking up his spear and wooden log tossing his shield to his back. " wait til i give the signal Lofi"

Then Tjodolfer goes over to Finni and Sulky and visper " May the grim one give us victory. Remember the oat and we wil be fine men" He puts his hand on they're shoulders and go over to Eymundr and Hrolleifr and visper " Let Ullr guide you Arrows hunter and may you live to make a song for long nights Eymunder" At last he goes over to Barni and visper " Luck be with you, I do beleave you can figth but we need silver to save the girl. see what you can get. Dont get killed, if we are in trouble join us. Give Lofi the ladder and take his shield bundel for now". Then Tjodolfer makes the signal to begin and walks out of the woods.....

Turning his spears and shield over to Biarni, Lofi grabs the rope ladder. He looks the merchant in the eyes and smiles briefly. Lofi then turns to Tjodolfr, waiting for his signal.

As their leader gives the signal, Lofi steps forward towards the fence, slightly hunched,. He makes his way to the obstacle as quickly as he can without rushing it. Reaching his destination, he gently
lowers one end of the ladder down on the inside. The other end he takes care is fully extended and resting against the fence before he let's go it. Lofi then grabs the top of the fence, heaves himself up and swings over it as gracefully as he can.

As Lofi clambers over the top and Dolfer begins to climb, Eymundr nervously looks around and grips his javelin tightly. This raid is likely the most dangerous action the band has taken yet, and he's still leery of Lubbicko. Or more specifically, leery of being used poorly by Lubbicko. But, the situation is what it is, and it's time to put aside doubts and what will be is what will be.

He turns back to Dolfer with a grin and a whisper, "Let's write a saga about our heroics, rather than our demise, shall we?"

Biarni grins at the rest, hoping not to show his nervousness, and readies himself for the climb. "I like your thinking, Eymundr. You should do that."

Lofi climbs to the top of the wet fence in just five seconds. He tries to find a way down with the rope ladder, but in the dark and wet it's not as straightforward as he thought it might be. Had it been daylight and dry this would have been easy, but should he fall, even though it is not a great height, he might spain an ankle or wrist and so he aborts his attempt to climb down. [Climbing, Page 58]

Sitting on the top of the fence he realises he must act swiftly as he will be somewhat silhouetted against the night sky. Consequently, Lofi has several options:-

  1. Test his luck. [re-roll Athletics, 1 Luck Point]
  2. Try to find another way down [re-roll Athletics @ hard difficulty]
  3. Jump/Fall down inside the fence voluntarily [1d6 damage, random location + noise??]
  4. Try something else...

Meanwhile, Tjodolfr and the other men wait below Lofi on the outside of the fence, on the ground. Skuggi has been secured at the earlier camp-site, such as it was, hopefully he won't bark...

His trousers catching onto the top of the fence, Lofi tries to wrestle hismelf free causing him to balance and drop down on the inside. Pain sears throgh his right arm as he hits the ground. Seeing Tjodolfr on his way over, Lofi steps on the lowest rung of the ladder on his side of the fence and crouches down, as to not be in the way of the men coming after him. He grabs hold of the rope of the ladder with his left hand, resting the other on his thigh.

Dolfer wil try to secure the Lader on the outside of the gate. IF needed he wil use one of the stakes/small tree/pole they made to secure it the he climb over.

Surely, despite his injury, the Gods would recognise Lofi's bravery in being first over the fence? And with a little luck, the noise of Lofi's little fall didn't attract any unwanted attention...

No that Lofi, with is painful right arm, has secured the rope ladder on the inside of the fence and with Dolfr securing it on the outside of the fence, the rope ladder seems steady enough for one person to climb over at a time.

Dolfer looks at the men and place his two poles and his spear at the fence and climb to the top. At the top Tjodolfer waits until someone pass him the bundle. He then lower it down to Lofi before he climb down.

Sulki hands Dolf his poles and spear, then steps to the side so Hrolleifr can climb. When the first group of three have gone over, Sulki leads the gate crew over the wall.

As the last man outside, Biarni hands Eymundr both their bundles, one after the other. When the ladder is clear, he climbs over and gathers his things. The silver must be in the main hall, surely?

(Would it be possible to draw our entry point into the map?)
